It seems to me like Chinese people have a world view similar to many Americans. "What happens over there doesn't matter over here." That seems to be the prevailing opinion. It's a little strange to me since it's the rest of the world who has powered China's growth through demand for exports and foreign investment.

So I'm curious, what do Chinese people really think about the rest of the world?

Sure you want to open that can of worms?

Trust me when I say, the world view in china isn't pleasant.

Partially cause of the propaganda they call education and partially cause the almost total lack of information (aside from the propaganda obviously).

Nothing showcases the mentality and point of view better than 1984 and I say that as a literary fanatic.

Either you go along with the masses and follow the Party-line through sheer blindness and/or double-think OR you become a thought-criminal (aka anti-china).

I read Seeing Red in China pretty often and Tom did 2 posts about this. Here's a quote that stuck out to me.

“And China supports the gov’t of Sudan that killed hundreds of thousands of its own people so that it can access their oil (further reading before you leave an angry comment),” I replied. The Chinese gov’t has failed to acknowledge that anything has happened in Darfur, and has worked to cover up its own involvement in the conflict.

I knew what they would say, “China does not interfere with the internal affairs of other countries,” but surely my co-workers personally did not support this genocide. How could they? We lived in Nanjing, and were surrounded by reminders of the Japanese atrocities, some of which occurred not more than a few hundred feet from where we were sitting. The older co-worker insisted, “Even if Chinese people knew what was happening, they wouldn’t care. We need the oil.”

Finally the younger co-worker found information on Sina, “See,” she said proudly, “we have this information. 350,000 people were killed.” The other one looked me square in the eye told me, “Chinese people just don’t care about it,” as if this was reassuring.

I know that Chinese media only covers the information or side of the story that the government supports but this is just ridiculous. This issue stings more for me since I'm a member of the Save Darfur Coalition and it just seems so weird that people don't know or care about these things.

I was talking about china and the soudan thing.

But now that you mention it, Americans are also pretty useless when it comes to put places on a map. And i'm not even talking about foreign places. I'd be curious to see how many people can place Oklahoma, Idaho or West Virginia on a map, or tell me the name of the state where the city of Washington is…

I'm not going to talk about european education to avoid coming off as pretentious, but  indian graduates for example, can place all the countries, all the US states and they know Spain and Zanzibar are NOT latin-american countries.

Washington? As in Washington DC? It's in the District of Columbia, which isn't a state. So…….yeah.

As a Canadian I can name more states than most Americans I know.

Of course that's without access to the Internet or a reference book.

The title "老外" is almost exclusively given to people of European/American/Australian origin.

My impression is that Chinese (of cause again a generalization, but i think it is true for people with both excellent and poor education) are VERY interested in the outside world, and if financial means allow, almost everyone likes to go abroad for travelling.

Nowadays media, for example the BBC-style Chinese news channel provides a lot of information about the rest of the world.

I was very suprised when my mother-in-law who hardly ever leaves her village started a discussion about the development of the Dow-Jones-Index Laugh

Certainly you can't expect that every Chinese shares the political opinion of the American State Department …

In general Chinese show much more interest in the developed countries than in the 3rd world countries. This is probably the case in most countries of the world, but in China it is more extrem. So you will hardly find Chinese who are experts in Sudan affairs, unless someone is doing business there.

China managed to get quite well through the Asian crisis in the late 90th and the latest world economic crisis. I think this explains why most Chinese trust in the economic "firewalls" of China (like foreign exchange control), so most Chinese are not so very much worried about the scary developments in Europe and the US.

I can only hope that this optimism is justified …

i am also a canadian and as elijah said our neighbors to the south are not that well informed about the rest of the world !

we in canada for the most part know more about the U.S.A. then they do or they know about canada !!!

i feel we also know more in general about the rest of the world !!

one thing i will say though the chinese maybe like the U.S. not caring much about the rest of the world but when needed they will take the time to learn !!!

my wife and her parents took great interest in learning about canada once they new we were to get married and she will come here in the future !

her father even went out and bought a large map of the world and hung it in his living room and marked the cities he studied ! hehehe

my wife has been learning many city names in canada and other things about where she will soon live !!!

you need to remember that most people in china are comfortable so not much need to worry what goes on abroad !! china is just one big machine now !!

in the old days my wifes father learned russian now today they learn english china just does what it needs to do to give its people the best living !!

at least they embrassed capitalism something that russia should had done a long time ago then they would still be a super power not all broke down and hurting for cash !!

So in the process of describing Americans as ignorant you make ignorant comments. I thought ignorance and arrogance were purely American traits but I'm glad to see that it's carried over to America's hat. Surprised

Yes, yes, let the butthurt flow through everyone.

It's at this point that the topic has been thoroughly de-railed and subverted.

oh i forgot to mention as to this post when i was in china the chinese basically told me they dislike americans but love canadians !!!

i found it funny they had this point of view since they try to gobble up everything american and also supply america with millions of things now !!!

so to me personally i found it very humerous indeed !!!

this is just what i found in general so please do not crucify me for this view !!

i am just telling you what my wife and her family told me and am backing it up with what other chinese tell me that are studying in my country !!!

so what i see the chinese will crawl in bed with america even if they do not like them a lot if it is a benifit to it's own people !!!

hay that make perfect sense to me !!! it is a what is best for us attitude nothing new i am sure !!!

oh the reason they like canadians so much is because we had canadian doctors especially one who stayed for months and months in their last major earthquake !!! most chinese people will tell you the story once they know you are from canada !!!

i was able to change a train sleeper because my wife told the chinese man i was from canada he told my wife the doctor story and also told her if i was from the U.S. or japan he would have not traded sleeper bunks with me to help my wife !!! hehehe

so please do not shoot the messanger i am only relaying the story for you all here !!
