I started to answer the questions in "Ask Chinese Girls" on formspring and saw this interesting question:
I was a Mandarin translator. I met a beautiful Chinese girl at a casino in the US. Instead of she and I having loving relationship, her mother wanted me to marry the older divorced sister. My lady said it was the only way we could be together. Customary??
I answered unfortunately yes. (Unless you flee with your loved one).
What do you think?

Is that situation for real? These days? Or depending on regions? (Guessing, sorry)
And the divorced older sister? What happened to the one child policy….?
I'm Korean residing in Canada, just to give you my background, and I haven't met a single friend from mainland China who has a sibling…. (yet?)
What am I missing here… Fill me in a bit, and I'd appreciate that. Sorry for the hassle.
He and his lady can help the older sister meet with someone soon – Happily unmarried just until the older sister's getting married can't be an option? :)

OfflineI think if a person said yes to the mothers request he would be very foolish !!!
I by him agreeing it would accomplish nothing and only end in disaster for all concerned of course the mother will be happy for awhile but it would come back to bite them all in the -beep- in the long run !!!
i can not even believe some one would seriously post a question like this are they for real !!!

Yes.. looking for a husband for the older sister is probably a better solution.
But the fact that the mother suggested the guy to marry the divorced older sister is just..sick.

Offlineoh i can see why the mother would suggest this in order to get back face and marry off the older unmarriagable daughter !!!
but pretty shallow thinking if you ask me !!!
not to mention the most interesting and ridiculous thing is that the guy agreeded to the mothers request and now is wanting to know what to do !!
my opinion is he should start to learn to love the older sister and forget about the younger one !!!
if not he should run for the hills before things get worse for him like the uncles maybe beat him in the future if he hurts the older daughter by getting caught with the younger one !!!
just my opinion for stupidity !!!

What? But the guy like the younger one not the older one… Why would the man be stupid enough to change his loved one to marry the older sister if he doesn't love her at all? For family glory? No way.

jin i agree with you but he now has made a commitment to marry the older sister so i feel it is too late for him he should just learn from his mistake and leave the whole situation !!!
because if he goes through with the marriage to the older sister he will have lots of trouble and if he doesn't he again will have lots of trouble !!! either way he should not agreed to marry the older sister when he really loves the younger one !!! jmo

His question doesn't state that he has also married the older divorced sister. He just doesn't know what to do.

I would say go for it with the proviso that you (the male) gets to have both sisters as often as you want. Polygamy is accepted in China so why not. If one Chinese woman is good than 2 from the same family would be better. I cant believe that we are still adhering to such traditional nonsense as 1 man and 1 woman in a relationship. Have the mother agree to giving him both sisters and then the problem is solved isnt it.
