Chinese Romantic Trip: Where Would You Go?

浪漫之旅:哪里是你最理想的地方?

Map of China

China is a beautiful country.  It has so many amazing places of interest, that when you plan a trip choosing the destination is a problem on its own. I know it from my own experience due to previous work in the travel agency.
Yesterday I was hit by idea to write a short guide to the most romantic and breathtaking places. And now I want to ask you a simple question – where would you like to travel with your soulmate?
In the poll below, please choose up-to 3 options. If your favorite place is not listed, please write it in comments below.
Result: Percentage shown next to each destination indicates how many people chose that option out of all respondents that have answered so far.
Thus, the cumulative result is more than 100%.

Thanks, Crystal Tao

When your lover suggests a romantic trip to HK, you know you’ve got the wrong girl…

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

    Hi Jim,

What if she suggests to go both to HongKong and Macau :?:

  • Jim Mao

Better, at least you have the opportunity to lose money before she spends it all! ;-)

I think any place which has relaxing scenery and the least number of people is the place for romance. That is why I voted for 3 the river/lake scenes, they at least looked peaceful. Being some place surrounded by thousands of people is not my idea of a romantic setting.

  • Brian

Hi Crystal it’s me Brian from yesterday…thanks for the quick and good reply to my email  Guilin is definitely number one on my list haha since the girl I told you about will be going to school for her masters there starting in September so it is an easy choice. She says it is beautiful there.

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

@Musicman … I had no doubt that you would choose Yangtze river :!:

@Brian … You are welcome, Brian. Most people agree with you – Guilin is a leader so far

Actually, in my book, the various natural areas of Guizhou beat out all of these. Why? Certainly Guizhou is known in China as a poor region, and many of my Chinese friends assured me it was “not fit for travel”. Having lived in Chongqing for more than a year, however, I had ample chance to visit this lesser-known province, and absolutely attest to some of its qualities which make it a good romantic choice:

    1. Less tourists than all of the above listed options. There’s nothing better at ruining a romantic mood than trying to wade through the wall of tourist at the Great Wall, or breath the exhaust of all the tourist buses in Guilin, Xishuangbanna, Hainan, etc. I especially recommend going to Guizhou and staying away from Huangguoshu Waterfall, a major tourist trap and one of the few places in the province that most Chinese have heard of.

    2. Guizhou falls within the same karst geological zone that make Guilin, Shilin (near Kunming), etc, such tourist hot spots. There are a multitude of natural parks in Guizhou (as well as the Tiankeng Sanqiao Nature Park just north of Guizhou, in Chongqing municipality) that possess mountains to hike, minority villages to explore, unpolluted rivers to raft or swim in, and of course lots of clean air to breathe! Peace and quiet at a ‘peasant hostel’, delicious food prepared fresh from the fields… what else can I say? Last summer I re-visited Maling Gorge Nature Park with my fiancee and family visiting from the States. There were maybe 20 other tourists in the whole park, and similar numbers when we visited the nearby ‘Ten Thousand Peaks’ which is just Guilin without all the tourist hubbub.

    3. Since it’s less of a tourist destination in general, you’ll find a much cheaper overall cost. Perhaps you can afford to spend a couple weeks on vacation instead of a couple days in overpriced HK.

    Dear Dr. Jones,

Thanks for your very detailed and insightful comment.
Indeed, for those people who want to stay away from crowds, Guizhou is a place to consider.

Well I voted for my top 3 -But to tell the truth the Lady I going to see has worked a lot harder than me for her time off. So I do my best to make it her vacation-Since we are not married-It will probably just be day trips in and around Nanning-Any romantic suggestions in that area? Thanks James

My parents are from Jiangsu and Shanghai, so I can say with some confidence that I know those two places fairly well, Shanghai is just like S’pore, in lots of ways, bustling and very tumultuous, but worth at least one visit. Jiangsu is less interesting (not boring though), with all those ancient parks and stuff, I first visited Jiangsu when I was about 10, so everything seemed pretty different to me then, but once the novelty wore off, well, let’s just say I enjoyed video games heartily. But going there with a lovely girl, Jiangsu would definitely be a winner, not so sure about the food, my friends from Singapore and Hongkong found Shanghai cuisine way too greasy (evidently not a problem to Sichuan natives), and Jiangsu cuisine too sweet.

I revisited Sichuan last summer vacation, didn’t get to do a lot sight-seeing, mainly stayed in Chengdu and Zigong. Chengdu is a lovely place, the city itself already has a lot to offer, and serving as the central transportation hub in Sichuan province, you would have no problem going to places like Jiuzhaigou (the most romantic and therapeutic resort in Sichuan), the Emei Mountains or Tibet(!). If you like spicy food, just pay a visit to Zigong, it’s this little city with all kinds of snacks that are all lighter than the air, my mouth is filled with saliva just thinking about their Lengchitu (rabbit meat sliced and served cold), you’re not gonna regret it. And if you just wanted to find a quiet place to sit down and just enjoy being with each other, the Bamboo Sea in Yibin is certainy a match, you might find it boring, but at least it’s pretty and quiet.

China is way too big, and all those provinces have something nice that’s worth seeing. I would love to visit all of them if I could, but my girlfriend is a Sichuan native, and she absolutely loves Sichuan cuisine, asking her to accompany me to visit any place without real Sichuan food is just being inexorable (kidding).

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

    Hi Phillip,

Reading your description of Sichuan cuisine makes me mouth-watering. “tao yan”. ;-)

Shanghai is indeed a city worth to visit. But is it really good for romantic trip?
I definitely prefer any provinces with beautiful sceneries and landscapes. (like Sichuan you mentioned.)

I live in Xiamen and it has a lot of scenic places, and the best part is Gu Lang Yu, a historic island 500 meters off the coast of the city. There are no cars or bicycles and it is full of European architecture, bed and breakfasts, cafes, and art shops. Perfect for a weekend getaway, and you’re still only minutes from home :-P.

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

    Hi Mark

I can see that not only Chinese but also foreigners who live in China have a kind of “national pride” for the province/place where they live. It seems that eventually any place in China have something romantic to offer.

  • http://laowaichris.blogspot.com/ Chris

I’ve always wanted to see the Yangtze river, it’s a shame I never managed to see it as I was living there. I also picked Sanya, another beautiful place I didn’t get to experience in China. One problem I found with China was that there were SO many great places to visit, it was almost impossible to choose where to go, hehe.

  • http://laowaichris.blogspot.com/ Chris

Also…I agree with Mark about Gulangyu in Xiamen. What a wonderful place, I didn’t want to leave when I visited there.

  • TLB

I’ve only visited three of these places (Beijing, HK, and Sanya) and found each of them romantic in their own way. My fiancee loves the bustle (“renao”) and I love the isolated natural beauty, so any place that has both will suit us (and quite a few places do). As long as I can wander slowly along a beach or on a mountain trail hand in hand, and she can drag me to a market later to haggle prices, we’re both happy! I guess at this point in our relationship, anywhere we go together is romantic.

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

@Chris: In my travel agency, Yangtze River Cruise was very popular among both Chinese and foreign tourists. And cruises are specially well-suited for lovers.

@TLB: You must go to Yangshuo of Guilin:!: Take my word for it.

  • Marco

I am thinking of a honeymoon trip in China, approximately 2-3 weeks, currently what in my mind are Lijiang, Jiuzhai Valley and Gulangyu in Xiamen. At the same time i am considdrring a cruise trip on Yangtze River. Any romantic stories about Yangtze?

  • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

    Hi, Marco

Yangtze river cruise was my specialization when I worked in travel agency
Even though I didn’t plan to post a separate article before compiling the whole guidebook to China’s romantic places – for Yangtze cruise I will make an exception.
As a teaser, I can tell that there are at least two wonderful places which can especially suit a loving couple: – a little bridge in the Fengdu Ghost City and Huangshan Mountain

Beyond any shadow of a doubt, the single best place in all of China is the departure lounge at the airport.

  • Mike

I would have to say Kunming is the best place to see ;-)

  • Mike

Hi Crystal, My lady and I are to be married on 19, July this year, we will leave Shenyang and go to Kunming, then ShenZhen, and then to Sanya for our honeymoon.

    • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

      Congratulations!
19th July is one of the luckiest days in 2011 for marriage. I am sure this is the reason why you chose this date.

  • Mike

Xiexie, Crystal, in truth it was my future Lao Po that picked this date, but I like it just fine haha.

  • Adrien

is there an option for “some other place” ?
