What Would You Want To Say In Chinese?

你想用中文说什么?

Want learn Chinese? There is a story about a Chinese man who spent a lot of time learning English language, then went abroad and realized that everyone around speaks Chinese.

Of course, this is just a joke – at least for today :-) … but there is little doubt that many people all over the world are interested in learning Chinese language and its popularity is growing every year.

The reasons for such interest are different: some are fascinated with Chinese culture, others find it helpful in their business, third regard it as a hobby or mere intellectual challenge.

Finally, there are people who have romantic reasons – they want to communicate with their Chinese soul-mates.

As some of readers have “confessed”, not few of you started relationship with Chinese ladies from innocent language exchange. Actually, improving your Chinese conversational skills can be a good excuse to get acquainted with girls ;-)  But in order to improve your skills, you must have them, right?

So, I decided to record few audios to help those of you who want to memorize 4-5 situational phrases of spoken Chinese – in order to hear a compliment from surprised girl: “Wow! You speak Chinese very well!” (which, of course, won’t be true :-)  )

At this point I want you to cast vote in the poll below and choose the topic(s) which you find most interesting or/and helpful. Please, choose upto 3 options.

If you have an idea for other topic (related to Chinese girls, of course) which is not listed here – please write it in the comment section.

But don’t propose the topics: “fighting with Chinese girl” or “breaking up with Chinese girl”. ;-)

How about “talking dirty to a Chinese girl”?

    • http://www.lovelovechina.com Crystal

Errr… I will think about it

      • Dreamer

I would vote for this too!

        • keius

          Sounds good to me :)
The way i look at it, it’ll get a good laugh if you try to
talk dirty and screw it up…
Might be a bad idea to have your SO laughing his/her **s off while
your trying to get it on though

  • Ziccawei

I know how to say ‘why are you being so cold with me?’ in Chinese, but I don’t think the real meaning translates as the same. This phrase would be particularly useful with some of these Shanghai girls who have had their emotional geography removed and replaced by an excel spreadsheet.

So far, every option is marked at least once except “Proposing marriage…”

    • Teacher in China

I would hope that’s because if someone were already going to marry someone that at least one person could use and understand the other’s language.

      • Nick

Excellent point, “Teacher in China”, but I think that it is a valid option because, if you are going to ask a lady what may be one of the most important questions of her life, you should do her the courtesy of asking it in her native language.

It is not just about effective communication. It is about respect for her, for who she is, and for her culture. It is about respect for her family, because odds are that her parents speak little to no English (or whatever your native language may be).

        • Teacher in China

Yeah that’s true. Maybe that’s where I went wrong before…

        • haha no

thats not fair, i got told i was going to get married and that was that…….

    • Carl

I’m already married to my Chinese girl, but the intamite, sweet names and apologizing(when I do a boo-boo) is something I need every day.

But then again, with my accect constantly shifting from the Illinois twang to the Texas drawl and back again, I would probably butcher any Chinese I attempted. I’ll stick to teaching English to Chinese college kids and hopefully they wont sound like me.

I watched an interesting video on You-tube once, about a Chinese guy that wanted to learn Irish, so he studied and studied, and traveled to Ireland, only to realize that nobody speaks Irish, they speak English in Ireland.

呢中文怎么说呢“宝贝,the golf course has 18 holes, i want to try the back 9, are you game?”

  • China Shark Mike

Call me a romantic but I would like to express deep emotions perfectly articulated in Chinese. Unfortunately sometimes it can only be loosely translated due to the cultural differences. Great one Z, totally agree with you on that one. Starting to understand a little Chinese so I feel there is hope for me yet. I would say proposal yet feel the other ones should precede like meeting the parents first. My girl put me on the spot the other day with her father on the phone. Felt like such an idiot all I could say was hello and oh boo dong.

  • Nick

Well, I ticked “Proposing”. I want to be sure I do it in a properly romantic and grammatically correct manner. I also ticked “Sweet Names” and “Intimate”, for those rare occasions when I can be alone with my angel.

Of course, we need the proper translation of “My hovercraft is full of eels.”

Try this one… and if you can find a video on Youtube, that would be brill!

“Could you send for the hall porter, there appears to be a frog in my bidet.”

  • Ziccawei

ok Crys, no one else is saying it so I will.

How do I say the following:

    - Wrap your legs around me, baby, show me that you love me

    - Against the wall and then against the refrigerator

    - with passion, sweetcheeks! PASSION!!

    - I love your sweet little honey cup – it gives me deep thrills….

    Thank you!!

Oh, Zicca, to achieve such deep level of Chinese language – you will need your own private tutor.

For some reason before I met my partner while dating several Chinese women (also the same with my partner), I found that even though I have learned Mandarin they all tend to speak English, especially during intimate encounters. With a couple of girls I know they enjoyed teaching me but they also wanted the benefit that having a native English speaking boyfriend gave to their own English.

I gave up Mandarin classes for some time because I realised that I had reached the point that I would not improve unless living in a Chinese speaking culture. But I am always looking to improve.

Crystal apart from the proposal, and picking up (already have my babe from Chengdu) I am interested in all the suggestions, including those suggested by other posters…

  • Peter Phelps

I chose apologizing because I think I need to be able to grovel better in Chinese. I guess saying I’m sorry and blockhead in Chinese perhaps does not translate as well as I would like. Ha ha. Ziccawei’s comment about the Shanghai girls kind of struck a note. I visited a lady in August from there that is studying at a US college. I made a big goof because I was too honest. When I got home I told her that I felt odd every time she would look down while we talked and my eyes followed to her chest we’ll say. Since I noticed myself doing this it felt awkward and so I thought perhaps I should fess up that was not intended in case she noticed. Sigh…she said the comment lost all the respect I earned on the trip. The frequency of messages has now gone to none so I really blew it (and all my friends said I should have known better). Sigh I guess I am low on common sense.

One of the reasons I wanted to study Mandarin and Chinese Characters was not only to be able to possibly communicate in the lady’s native language (which I think we will always think in our native tongue but then try to connect to the new language), but also I very much feel that when you merge the two cultures you also merge the language. I would not want to come home and have say my wife and my children talking and not know what they were saying (I have no kids yet, just thinking future). I think it is just fair since if we are bringing lady to our country and expect her to learn our language we should be willing to learn hers too. I admit that until I started studying Mandarin I always wondered why in the movies Chinese speakers had such broken English, it was only through understanding more about Chinese grammar that I could appreciate the differences.

Yeah, Z that would probably get you in trouble with any women in general

  • Rhys F

Unless she’s a hooker, most girls get pissed if all you can stare at is her tits…

You might have saved things by complimenting them tho ;)

So spill the beans Peter, did she have good hooters?

    • Peter Phelps

They were average. For those of you that are interested in the more crude aspects of Chinese language (that stuff you will not find in the dictionaries), you might want to check out “Making Out In Chinese” by Ray Daniels. Although, I am not 100% sure that it is completely accurate. Let’s just say I have not had the chance to use much of it.

A Chinese girl bought me this book as a gift!

        It is, indeed, quite useful….

I always found that the Chinese girls’ English improved pretty rapidly without little or no formal study. I guess English-speaking foreigners exude an English language musk :-P

  • China Shark Mike

No, truth be told in my experience Asians seem to be naturally linguistically gifted. Being around foreigners improves thier comprehension skills therefore they pick it up quickly. Coming up on two years I’m even starting to pick up what people are saying just by the tone as well as key words. Can always tell a minute before my friends are getting ready to hang up the cell because I hear the same repetitive words. Usually hubba hubba or holla holla which I am told is okay or alright. Exposure to the culture is how to learn the langauge. Total immersion has been the latest Chinese English format in the last year. Makes sense, physically visualizing the objects to permanently imbed the vocabulary in the mind.

    • Nick

CSM – I think it has to do with the higher level of abstraction in their languages. While there are SOME hints to meaning and pronunciation in Chinese characters, they are hardly phonetic, so there is a significantly higher level of abstraction involved in learning the language than in learning a language with a simpler writing system such as Spanish.

This would also explain why they tend to be better (in general) at maths.

CSM – am I alone in this one or is there something amazingly sexy about very intelligent women?

    • Nick

That “holla holla” may be 好的好的, which I hear my angel say often toward the end of a phone conversation. It just may be the local dialect to give it a different pronunciation from “hao3 de hao3 de” in Mandarin.

(speaking of my angel – she’s sending me the sweetest text messages. T-Mobile in the US does NOT truncate the high bit, so you can send and receive Chinese text messages. Pick up an iPhone in Asia and then get a t-Mobile card in the US and you can send Chinese text messages to your sweetheart!)

  • Nick

Crystal – we need a “Technology tips for long-distance romance with Chinese ladies” column some time. There are many ways proper use of technology can help improve communication and help strengthen the long-distance relationship. (Ziccawei, I mean COMMUNICATIONS technology, just so you don’t get any ideas and make perverted comments.)

This weekend I will officially announce the creation of forums (and send out invitations  ).
“Technology tips” could take their respectful place among forum topics.

Nick you are starting to make me feel sick. I love my partner as well but I can keep it inside sometimes, is this your outlet.

In psychology terms you are displaying a lot of signals of a lonely person. Good luck on getting more time with your girlfriend soon, partly so the rest of us can keep our food down, and also because you seem to be lost and lonely away from her.

On the question of intellect being sexy I think it depends on the temperament of the lady and also the man. I find it very sexy, but not on everyone. I find a few women and men can wear it as a badge and try to display superiority at all times, this is not sexy at all. My own partner is smart and sexy, very well educated and intelligent. However she is not a very confident lady. I offer her encouragement and support to get past this, but the positive side is that she does not have the type of inflated ego that many other women with her intellect might display.

On my own side I am probably too confident for my own good, however it does have some positive effects for a man and is also required in my chosen vocation. I just need to keep myself in check, many people struggle with that.

  • China Shark Mike

Nick, I have to agree with Bored In Sydney what are you talking about really. There is such a thing as being too clingy. Let me guess when she moves to your country you’ll buy some cute couple shirts to make everyone know you’re an item. Friend Josh is exactly this way. His girlfriend bought him a ring and when my girl and I and Josh and his girl went to KTV he couldn’t restrain himself more than 3 minutes after we met up to show me this cheap ring she bought him. She claimed it was so that other women wouldn’t be flirting with him and that he’s taken. Ironic part is that he’s not a very good looking or confident guy so woman don’t flirt with him. Just the other day I went to lunch from one of my new jobs and was passing by Wall Street English and this woman went out of her way to coyishly ask if I was interested in studying English, he he:}. Whatever, kind of threw me for a loop, woman today waiting for the elevator blurts out are you an English teacher? Yeah, she agrees I look like an English teacher. Bored I know where you’re coming from with the ego thing. Here I’m the proverbial king, don’t know if I can ever look at women the same after being spoiled here. Too smart and they ain’t worth a damn, same goes for too beautiful. There is price tag for everything in life. Just have seen too many guys marry over desperation and loneliness. I’ve been living here on the ground so I know what I’m talking about. Blowing smoke up one’s butt does not make you a chimmney. I view my present relationship as being my last one on this plain of excistence. I probably dated well over 2 dozen girls in the course of 2 years. Seen the rich, the poor, money grubbers, green card babies, etc. Now I can be more objective that I’ve dealt with many types of women. Nick you make a blank generalization about Chinese women. How many have you been in a serious relationship. Personally, I officially been in 3 relationship and 1 unofficial relationship and was once married to a Chinese woman. Try not to be tunnelvisioned by oh my god a woman really cares about me in China. Chinese women commidities, most Chinese men state that there are so many availible that it is like changing a pair of pants or a shirt. I’ve heard that from a lot of students and aquaintences {men}. By the looks of it she sounds real yet cannot be really sure of anything until you actually live with one another. My exwife and I didn’t last 2 years. Married for all the wrong reasons. Better to be safe than ending up getting a divorce later along the line.
