(If you’re interested in the opposite case – How a Finance Guy Gets a Hong Kong Girl – check out the article here by Jin Wong)
I have always been fascinated by women with ideas, ambitions, and dreams. During my first month in Hong Kong, I dated many girls, but all of them turned out to be just too shallow, or too clingy, or both. I was a bit bored by these beautiful dolls: good looking, but silent and with no interests. Every time I asked them what they wanted to do, or where they wanted to go, they would answer “Oh. Up to you!”. “Great! Next time I’ll buy a pet”, I would think.
I thought I had to go fishing in another pond. I wanted someone independent, proactive, ambitious, open-minded and filled with passion. For some reason, I started thinking that this woman would be someone working in finance. Maybe it was the better education, or the more international dimension of their work that lured me. I didn’t know why, but I was fascinated by their determination, energy, and strength. Someone who travels around the world for business, I thought, should probably have something interesting to say. I didn’t know I was so wrong!
The first finance girl that I met was not beautiful, but somehow stylish. On the first date, she was telling me about her ex- and his Ferrari. “Wow,” I thought. “Driving at 50 km/hour in HK’s narrow streets with a Ferrari!” Of course the real message was clear: could I compete with her ex-? Obviously not. And, for the first time in my life, I felt that someone was looking down on me! Yes, a not-too-beautiful and not-so-young girl who was still living with her mom was judging me and thinking that I wasn’t good enough for her. OK girl, go back to your loneliness: dismissed.
The second finance girl I met spent all dinner talking about her vacations. We were at a Thai restaurant, where she was drinking a Coconut milk. It made her think of this story, which was supposed to be funny. “I went to Koh Samui with a friend”, she said, “and we rented a car to visit the island. Every time we saw someone on the streets selling coconuts, we stopped and I got not just one, but two! and only for me!” Wow! Really wild! Sex, drugs, and rock & roll, huh? OK. Next please!
Finance girls are always busy. They claim that they always travel for business, and when they are back in Hong Kong, they have to prepare for the next trip. When they finally have some days off, they travel for leisure again. Within a few days, I met two different girls who told me that they were going Phuket to train. I thought God was playing a joke. I couldn’t believe the coincidence. Apparently, finance people have to be “healthy”, They play sports, they must be adventurous, and they live green! In a word: they have to conform to a standard. So it is very difficult to meet up with them, because they want to give you the idea that they never have time. “Oh, maybe I can meet you for a coffee at IFC. I have 20 minutes, after I wash my car, and right before I meet my friends”. Sure… But the funny part is that most of the times they are alone. They post beautiful pictures of their apartments on Facebook, impressive apartments in the Mid-levels of course (one of the most boring and overpriced areas of Hong Kong, but such a status symbol!), but those apartments are always empty. In most cases they live with their family, because they don’t want to spend money for renting a place. But of course they will look down on you when your place is not as fancy!
It is difficult to talk to a finance girl. They always want to impress you, pretending that they have such an exciting life (when, in fact, they are quite lonely). They want to tell you about their trips, the places where they have fine dining, the spas they visit, and the races they run around the world. On the other hand, when they listen to you, it seems that they are always searching for something between the lines. They’re not interested in sharing experiences with you. They’re just interested in extracting information about you, your background and your bank account from your story. They seem to be continuously looking for something. It is probably their work that brings the worst out of them. Finance girls are very shallow. They have no interest in or curiosity about life. When I started to realize this, a girl just told me out right: “I am shallow. Just like any other finance people”. Illuminating. Another girl once told me: “I have very little time, I want other people to adapt to my schedule. I am a selfish bitch”. Of course. No wonder you go to bed alone every night at 10:30.
Maybe I just haven’t been lucky with girls in finance. Dating the girls that I did date was a waste of time and money; they are the only girls who expect me to pay, while, of course, never offering to even chip in for dessert, but it was interesting from an “anthropological” point of view. They were fake like the plastic world they live in. Yet, they still represent an enigma to me and I am stubborn enough to try to date some more. I can’t leave this unsolved!
